Chemical Drum Storage - What I Need To Know To Safely Store Chemical Drums

First, you should make a list of the different types or classes of chemicals to be stored in your drum storage area. You can check the Material safety data sheet(MSDS) for each chemical. The MSDS is available from your chemical supplier and you are obliged to have these available for reference by staff. The MSDS will provide details on the hazard associated with each chemical(corrosive, flammable, Toxic, Oxidiser etc.,). If you have any questions, you should address them to your chemical supplier. You should put an MSDS holder with all the MSDS’s in the drum storage area for reference.

It is important to check also whether the chemicals in the Drum storage area are compatibile with each other. There is the risk of a violent reaction if there is a leak or spillage from two non compatible chemicals. Reference should be made to the MSDS. Any non compatible chemicals will need to be stored away from each other and on separate bunds.

The Drum storage area will need to be bunded to capture and retain spilled chemicals. The bund capacity should be either 110% of the capacity of your largest container or 25% of the total volume of chemicals to be stored in your chemical storage facility – whichever is the larger volume. A spill kit should also be located at the entrance to the Drum storage area to deal with any spillages which occur outside the bunded area, e.g. during deliveries of chemicals.

Any harmful vapours will need to be vented from your Drum storage area either by natural ventilation through louvred ventilation panels in the walls or by installing an extraction system. A minimum of 10 air changes per hour in the Drum storage area is recommended. If you are storing highly flammable liquids, all electrical equipment in your Drum storage area will need to be atex/Ex rated, so that it doesn’t ignite any flammable vapours.

If, you are storing Highly Flammable Chemicals in your Drum storage area you, the construction may need be fire rated. The fire protection(usually one hour) will isolate your highly flammable chemicals from any fire or source of ignition, for enough timer to allow staff to evacuate and to allow fire fighters to deal with the fire.

Other items to consider for your Drum Storage facility are, a safety shower with eye wash, should an operator get accidentally splashed with chemicals and Safety signage should be fitted. Personal safety equipment(goggles, gloves, etc.,) should be located in your drum storage area.
